1873 Crookes Radiometer is a sealed container filled with a small amount of gas at very low pressure & a black & white paddle wheel in it , light causes darker side to heat up slightly, & that causes the gas atoms on that side to vibrate more & propel it mostly in one direction
this is sometimes confused with the 1901 Nichols radiometer where radiant energy of the incident beam was deduced from its heating effect upon a small blackened silver disk
The inventor incorrectly suggested that the force was due to
"the pressure of light " BUT In 1901, with a better vacuum pump,
the vanes stay motionless in a hard vacuum it only works when
there is some low-pressure gas in the bulb
