After recent news that the PM had caved in on just about every Brexit issue, reports are now suggesting that possibly up to a dozen cabinet ministers will be ‘leading a defiant stand’ - to tell Theresa May that she must insist that there is a system in place in any Brexit deal to ensure the UK has control over how long it stays in any backstop arrangement to prevent the return of a hard border in Ireland. Something the Irish PM, Leo Varadkar, has said is unacceptable - he wants up tied in forever.
And as far as one unnamed cabinet minister is concerned, if that mechanism is not in place then she can kiss her deal goodbye, telling the Sun:
“We must have control of the backstop. If Theresa doesn’t stare down the EU and win a mechanism that does this, the whole argument is immaterial as there is zero chance of passing the Commons. She doesn’t have the numbers.”
But she may well disagree on that point given the ghoul of Corbyn leering over their shoulders.
And an unnamed Cabinet Source said:
“It’s important for us to be able to say we really have taken back control and been true to the referendum result.”
And the Telegraph reports that the Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab is very unhappy about how he feels he was recently undermined over the whole Irish border issue by two of his cabinet colleagues.
According to the report he wrote to the PM urging her to change direction in the talks, and now the Brexit Secretary’s office has had to deny rumours that he is thinking of resigning.
