If you've seen any of ProtonJon's streams, he tends to play a lot of games of questionable quality. Quite a few of these are games with repetitive music being played for long stretches of time, and usually if I'm gonna sit there and listen to that song over and over again, I might make something of it. For context, Quest 64 is one of the very few RPG's on the Nintendo 64 that wasn't Paper Mario/developed by Nintendo themselves, and in it you grind out stats just by completing tasks relating to said stat. One of these stats increases by running around, and can be cheesed by holding a certain direction, unplugging the controller, and letting the protagonist (Bryan) run around in circles forever. This was the track this trick was executed in for the stream, and since he'd be running for a while, I figured I'd get to work on it during the stream.
Unlike some of the other songs that fit that criteria, this one actually wasn't too bad on its own. It's an ear-worm, yes, but it's well composed if nothing else. The only issues that arose when remixing it were the low quality of the sound itself, combined with little to no sheet music of this song, meaning I had to listen to scratchy-quality music in order to cover it by ear. Not fun.
Also, I was actually gonna save this for 2019 as a filler track, but then I realized that I miscalculated what day Mega Man 2's anniversary landed on (I thought it was tomorrow, and not Christmas Eve), and that left me with an open slot today. This technically makes this the last track made for 2018 (despite what I said earlier), and I'll be honest: I don't know how to feel about that.
