Hundreds celebrate the Sikh festival of Vaisakhi in Dublin
RTÉ heard that hundreds of people celebrated the Sikh festival of Vaisakhi in Dublin on Sunday. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar joined the celebrations at the Sikh Temple in Ballsbridge, Dublin becoming the first Taoiseach to attend the event.
RTÉ heard from one Skih woman who told them "we have to teach our kids what day is it because they born here, they don't know anything. If we don't tell them, if we don't come here, they wouldn't know what it is when they grow up so it is very important and big day for us."
Representatives of the Gardaí were also in attendance and RTÉ heard that members of the Sikh community welcomed the decision to allow Sikhs to wear their head gear on duty if they become members of the police force.
RTÉ heard that Sikhs hope that initiatives like this will help improve diversity in Ireland and further integrate the Indian community.
