Ephesians 2:8-9 is one of the most quoted Bible passages in modern Christianity. Churches love it because they feel it so strongly supports the idea that good works are not necessary for salvation (even though they will usually admit that good works are fine in terms of earning "extra credit" with God). They also use this passage to preach against "working your way to heaven"... the idea that trying to be good actually EXEMPTS you from God's grace and salvation. But does this passage really support such ideas?
