Even as a 3rd positionist, I would like to state that I am all for common sense drug laws, an end to the drug war and full recognition of cannabis as the plant of God. That said, I have come to disdain the whole pot culture that now surrounds the legalization movements around the world (which I was a part of once) and now view it as problematic, as I realize it's largely responsible for turning generations of youth into lazy slackers unconcerned about the social economic turmoil around them. I'm talking of course about stuff like Cheech n Chong, Trailer Park Boys, Harold and Kumar, Black Sabbath, Pantera, stoner rock in general, snoop dogg and hip hop, Bob Marley and reggae in general, Sublime, High Times magazine, movies like Easy Rider, the whole 60s counter culture, and the 90s (the 60s part 2 with a more nihilistic edge to it). As such I try to avoid the vast bulk of it as another tentacle of today's bread-and-circus distractions, alongside Hollywood movies in general, tv, professional sports, pornography, pro-wrestling, mma, pop and mainstream music, video games, comic books, fashion trends, etc.
THAT said, this is still an excellent and informative as hell documentary that everyone who's at least curious about the history of marijuana and it's legal status and cultivation throughout the different regions of the world should see. Alex de Renzy (yes, THAT Alex de Renzy) travels the globe and all throughout the American legal system investigating the mysteries and legal problems surrounding the cannabis plant. He interviews everyone from supreme court judges and lawyers to d.e.a agents and customs officials; crosses the border into Canada to make a drug deal (presumably) (beautiful music during this sequence btw); he goes to Vietnam during the war and interviews stationed G.I.s (which really gives the film a true time capsule feel), visits Cambodia and buys a huge bushel of weed for a mere dollar (!!!!), smokes hashish in India…..a real lost treasure.
