Navy uses new high-energy LASER WEAPON

US Navy revealed a new high-energy laser, Laser Weapon System Demonstrator (LWSD), on Friday

The weapon's first ever at-sea test was conducted on May 16 and shared by officials on Friday

The weapon shot down a drone while attached to the USS Portland, which is currently stationed near Pearl Harbor in Hawaii

It is an upgraded version of  Weapon System (LaWS), which was the military's first completely approved laser platform
The laser can take out drones, small boats and is a 'dazzler,' meaning it can blind enemy sensors

Development of the weapon spanned 34 months
