Tchaikovsky completed this suite for piano in 1867 with the premiere performance being given in February with Nikolai Rubenstein as the soloist. The work was composed while Tchaikovsky was living in Hapsal, a town in Estonia, but which at the time was part of the Russian Empire.

This suite is comprised of three movements:
I. Ruines d'un chateau
II. Scherzo
III. Chant sans paroles
