Shadow Sorcerer (1991, PC)

Shadow Sorcerer is a mix between real-time-strategy and RPG. It was developed by British companies U.S. Gold and Arc Developments, and published by SSI. It was also released for Atari ST and Amiga.
The story takes place during the first Drangonlance campaign from AD&D. The heroes have fled with large group of refugees and must guide them to safety and away from the Draconians and the evil dragons.
You control a party of four characters which you can select from the twelve protagonist guarding the track of refugees. There are three modes of gameplay. The first lets you move your party on a hexfield-based landscape in search for a path to a safe haven. The refugees are represented by one are several different icons. They will follow your party, but sooner or later some might split from the track and either refuse to continue or even go back to their homes. The second mode lets you negotiate with the leaders of the several factions of refugees where you need to convince them to continue following you. Apart from your choice of measures also the amount of available food and the mood will influence the refugees' decision.
Dragons and armies of Draconians are following you and will also capture refugees if they catch up with them.
The third mode lets you control your party members individually in an isometric environment. You enter this mode if you either have an encounter or come to place you can explore (e.g. a cave or village). In the latter case, you might find friendly NPCs, useful things or might also be attacked by enemies.
During combat, you can give a few commands to your characters, like melee attack, flee or cast spell.
All modes are in real-time, so for example, if you wait for the refugees to catch up with you, enemies will also catch up with you easier. Healing your characters, preparing spells, exploring places: everything takes up time and needs to considered.
