Lex Hixon: Did you achieve that serene space you’re in touch with through anything that you’ve done in your life?
Alan Watts: One doesn’t achieve it, you see. That is asking the wrong question. In the same way, one doesn’t speak of achieving it, because you have to understand first that there is no separate “you” to achieve it.
Lex Hixon: So it doesn’t matter what one does.
Alan Watts: What one does are mostly empty motions. Look, that is the point people need to understand. When you understand it, you can act creatively, because you are acting with the whole energy of the universe behind you.
That energy is Prajna, which means “intuitive wisdom,” the fundamental sense of life. We can’t talk about it, because it is ineffable. In Greek, that means “what cannot be spoken,” in the same way that “mysticism” comes from the Greek verb mu-een—mu, which is the finger on the lips—and we say, “Mum’s the word.” There’s something that can’t be told, and that’s what is important.
