Three militants of Ukraine's nationalist Azov regiment - Vladyslav Kurka (https://pow.southfront.press/6761-ukrainian-pow-vladislav-aleksandrovich-kurka-1995/), Pavel Stepanov (https://pow.southfront.press/6769-ukrainian-pow-pavel-sergeyevich-stepanov-1998/) and Sergey Shevela (https://pow.southfront.press/6773-ukrainian-pow-sergey-vitalievich-shevela-1998/) - were sentenced by a court to 22 years in prison for shelling residential houses.
Between March 5 and 10, 2022, while in position near the cemetery, they fired at least 100 shells with fragmentation and fugitive mines at three houses on the outskirts of Mariupol. The residential houses were destroyed.
According to the testimonies of Stepanov and Shevelа, when they received the order to open fire, they asked Kurka who they were firing at, to which he replied that they would "nightmare civilians". At that time, the Azov soldiers were of the opinion that “the war will write off everything” and no one will bear any responsibility for their crimes, so they felt complete impunity.
