The problem is caused by the lower voltage, likely due to a faulty regulator.
The voltage going to the control arm is insufficient, causing the arm to drop and drag the head along the platter.

The higher voltage required to operate 3.5" drives…

The problem is caused by the lower voltage, likely due to a faulty regulator.
The voltage going to the control arm is insufficient, causing the arm to drop and drag the head along the platter.

The higher voltage required to operate 3.5" drives, thus given to the 2.5" by the 3.5" compatible docking station, compensates for the voltage insufficiency and allows the drive to operate normally.

In any case, this drive will need to be replaced.

I just thought this was interesting, and wanted to share with you :)
