Dave Clemo Covers Band- I've Just Seen a Face

This is another track from the album’s worth of cover songs that we recorded in our home studio back in August 2007. To cut a long story short, I had the idea of recording a complete album of songs in a couple of days. I enlisted the help of my son Chris on drums. His friend Jay was staying at our house so we roped him in to play lead guitar. We invited Chris Fordham along to play bass. It was going to be a tight squeeze to fit us all into the converted garage and it was a very hot day!
The concept of the album was simple. I’d been recording my own songs for some years and fancied the idea of recording cover versions for a change. I also wanted to return to a time when touring bands would call into a studio on the way from one show to the next to record their next single and ‘b’ side in one four hour session.
As usual there was a twist. I chose songs by one artist and we played them in the style of another. This is our mash-up of a Beatles country style song had it been recorded by Plastic Bertrand. Ca plane pour moi!
We set up in the studio. It was a tight fit. Once we’d sound checked the levels we made a start. We started (as they say) at the beginning, on track one. I discussed my idea of the arrangement of the song, had a quick run through to make sure we could play it, and then hit the record button. Most songs were captured on the first take. On that first day we recorded ten tracks and came back a day or two later to do all the overdubs which included all the backing vocals (mostly me); all the guitar solos (mostly Jay) and a few extra bits of drums.
I took the data to my good friend Andy Crawley who loaded it up on his system and did a fantastic job on the mixing and mastering.
If there was ever such a thing as a vanity project- this was it. I just wanted to prove that it could be done. We only played a couple of shows before splitting up.
The tracks were stored on a hard drive for ten years or more while I got on with other projects. I recently rediscovered them and decided to make a video or two.
