the rolling stones - sister morphine (take II) - stereo remix II
Edit 2 (take 2) for headphones, December 2023. Source is cd 4 of the 4cd bootleg album "Black Box" by "Yellow Dog" (special millenium edition YD 046/047/048/2000). This version is much different from the official release. Solo guitar far far better, than, sorry, the official release. More distinctive. The official release is more haunting, and that probably was the intention. The bootleg's album sleeve says: take I, the cd says take II.
Recorded in May & June of 1968. Released April 23, 1971 on the album "Sticky Fingers".
Lead vocals: Mick Jagger. Acoustic guitar: Keith Richards. Slide guitar: Ry Cooder. Bass: Bill Wyman. Drums: Charlie Watts. Piano: Jack Nitzsche.
Marianne Faithfull recorded this during The Stones' "Let It Bleed" sessions (she was Mick Jagger's girlfriend at the time). Her version was released in 1969.
The Stones recorded this in 1968 (it is from the "Beggars Banquet" sessions), but their version was not released until 1971.
Ry Cooder played the bottleneck guitar on this track.
Some of the lyrics were inspired by the time Anita Pallenberg, Keith's girlfriend (before that she was Brian's girlfriend) was hospitalized and given morphine.
"Sister Morphine" was the B-side to Marianne Faithful's single "Something Better", released on 21 February 1969. Marianne composed the song together with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Mick Jagger wrote the music in Rome in 1968. Marianne Faithfull wrote the lyrics.
SISTER MORPHINE
(Jagger/Richards/Marianne Faithful)
here I lie in my hospital bed
please sister morphine, when are you coming round again
oh, I don't think I could wait that long
oh, you see that I'm not that strong
all the other patients said, they'd never seen a man in such pain
tell me, sister morphine, when are you coming round again
oh, I don't think I can wait that long
oh, you see that I'm not that strong
the scream of the ambulance is sounding in my ears
hey me, sister morphine, how long have I been lying here
what am I doing in this place
why does the doctor have no face
oh, I just can't crawl across this floor
can't you see, sister morphine, I'm trying to score
well it just goes to show
things are not what they seem
hey sister morphine, turn a nightmare into dreams
oh, can't you see I'm fading fast
and that this shot will be my last
sweet cousin cocaine, lay your cool hands on my head
please sister morphine, you better make up my bed
'cause you know and I know in the morning I'll be dead
yeah, and you can sit around, yeah and you can watch
all my clean white sheets stained red
