21% of homeless families in Dublin are non-EU citizens
SOME 21% OF new families presenting as homeless in Dublin last year were non-EU citizens, according to a new Homeless Action Plan by Dublin City Council.
On average, 92 new families presented as homeless each month.
12% were citizens of other EU member states and 64% were Irish citizens. 120,000 Irish citizenships have been handed out since 2011 masking accurate figures for the number of families of non-Irish origin presenting as homeless.
The Dublin Regional Homeless Executive wants a clear protocol from Irish government bodies on what non-EU citizens' entitlements are. They say it's a growing problem and could be exasperated by the Brexit issue.
They say the entitlements of Irish citizens and EU citizens are very clear but it's not clear for non-EU citizens.
"This are people who came here to work. These are people who might be here illegally or are applying for legal residency status".
The report points out that the Dublin area accounts for 68% of the current national homeless population.
The number of homeless families increased by 58% in the two years between March 2016 and March 2018 alone.
Overall, the total number of homeless adults and children in Dublin increased from 4,300 adults and children to a total of 6,887 during the same period.
