orlared: Unexpected levels of immigration lead to poorly constructed schools being slapped up quickly (Ireland)

Katherine Donnelly, the Education Correspondent with the Irish Independent told Pat Kenny that in 2007, the government was taken aback by the large number of children applying for school admissions "who they didn't really have on their radar in the way they should have". She said the problem would have arisen due to the growing birth rates in the late 90s and the surge of immigrants into the country.

By 2007 the Dept of Education realised they did not have enough school places for the children coming on stream so they started a project to build 32 schools within one year under a rapid build program. Many of these schools are now in danger of closure so they can be examined over structural concerns.
