BBC host accuses Irish senator of 'tough talk' over deal
The Irish backstop, designed to avoid a hard-border between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic, has remained to be the key sticking point in Brexit negotiations.
The heated BBC Today programme debate started when the Irish Senator failed to clarify how Ireland is willing to compromise on Brexit. Mr Robinson asked for clarification from Ireland about how willing it is to move in order to get a Brexit deal. He said: “Forgive me, but Senator Richmond we all know that you think it is a good deal. We know that you signed it.
“What I am trying to ask you, given as we have just heard, the UK has a lot to lose, Ireland has an awful lot to lose, people assume it is time for flexibility.
“Whereas, you seem to be saying that’s the deal and the deal is the deal and we are not changing. Is that really your position?”
The Fine Gael politician replied and claimed the Irish side has made “tons of concessions” throughout the Brexit process.
The BBC host blasted: “So, no change?”
He added: “This is just negotiating talk. It’s just tough talk. It’s not just me saying this by the way. The Irish Times at the weekend said Ireland could face a choice of backstop concessions or no deal Brexit.
