Israel: Coronavirus-tracking bracelet given out to incoming travellers at airport
Ruptly
A pilot programme to test electronic bracelets designed to monitor incoming travellers during their quarantine kicked off at the Ben Gurion airport on Monday.
The bracelet offers an alternative to a mandatory stay at a state-administered hotel during the quarantine period. Instead, travellers will be able to wait out the mandatory isolation time from their home.
"When I entered they asked me if I wanted to go home or to a hotel so I said I want to go home. They said if you want to go home you have to use the surveillance bracelet,'' said Soliman, a traveller arriving at the airport.
"It is a very good decision, we can be at home and it is a great thing," said Hadas, another arriving passenger.
The device does not show a location on a map, but it will alert authorities if participants venture too far from the wall-mounted tracker.
Israel has suffered over 5,760 coronavirus deaths and over 779,900 positive coronavirus cases, according to John Hopkins University.
