Serenade and Allegro giocoso for Piano and Orchestra in B minor, Op. 43 by Felix Mendelssohn

This short work for orchestra was completed in 1838 while Mendelssohn was living in Leipzig, with the premiere performance being given in April the same year. The composer had become exceedingly famous in Europe due to the premiere of his oratorio ‘St. Paul’ given in 1836, and was sought after in the musical centres of Prussia, Austria, Italy and Britain. Despite pressure to relocate to places like Berlin, London or Vienna, Mendelssohn would officially reside in Leipzig from 1835 until his death in 1847.

This work is comprised of two movements:
I. Andante
II. Allegro giocoso
