Fantasy in C for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 131 by Robert Schumann
By 1853, despite having a large portfolio of work, Schumann would only have a sparse collection of works featuring a violin as the soloist. As such in June of 1853 the musician Joseph Joachim, a violin virtuoso and friend of Schumann, would request that the composer write a Fantasy for Violin that Joachim could perform.
By September of the same year Schumann had completed a sketch of the fantasy in C and gave the work to Joachim. The violinist would perform the work for Schumann at the Schumann residence the same month, with the public premiere being given in October in Dusseldorf.
This work is comprised of a single movement.
