Today, I'm talking with Zac from @AdherentApologetics about mythicism. I discuss why i am a mythicist and what mythicism is. Zac is an apologist and he doesn't really push back against me at all but he does bring up some common responses to Mythicism. We discuss Josephus' references and the typical reaction of appealing to the consensus.
As an advocate for skepticism and critical analysis, I've always been intrigued by the historical claims of religious texts and the arguments presented by both sides of the Jesus mythicism debate. Through rigorous research and engaging in numerous discussions, I've found the mythicist argument—that Jesus might not have been a historical figure but rather a construct of early Christian narratives—particularly persuasive.
In this episode, we explore various facets of this debate, including the evidence (or lack thereof) for Jesus' existence, the role of mystery cults in shaping early Christian thought, and how socioeconomic pressures could have influenced the creation of a messianic figure. We also tackle the ambiguous writings of Paul the Apostle, the challenges with the Gospel accounts, and the critical examination of external references to Jesus in historical texts.
