Star Trek: The Next Generation - A Final Unity is a point-and-click adventure game. It was developed and published by Spectrum Holobyte, and it also came out for classic Mac. As the title suggests, it was based on the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation, but it features an original story.
The Enterprise is on patrol at the border of the neutral zone when they receive a distress call from a small approaching vessel. The vessel heeds from Garid, a world allied with the Romulan Empire, and has thus violated Federation space. It turns out the ship is chased by Warbird from Garid. The people on the smaller vessel beg Picard for help, while the Garideans on the Warbird state they are dealing with an internal affair the Federation should not get involved in. Here the game starts with your decision how to react.
The game has a similar formula as Interplay's adventure games based on the classic series. The game is divided into several missions and tasks the crew has to deal with. These take place on different planets, space stations etc. where you have a "mini-adventure" with a few screens. You control an away team of four characters, and you have several common Star Trek gadgets at your disposal, like a tricorder or a phaser. There are several ways to solve problems and several possible outcomes to the mission. Between missions, you get to control the Enterprise to some extend. You can set destinations on your own, control the ship in tactical battles and manage the engine section. You can delegate the fighting and the engine to Worf and Geordie. but if you play on a higher level difficulty (there are three), they can be overtaxed in some fights. On the other hand, you have more freedom at higher difficulty, e.g. you can choose which crew members are part of the away team.
There is also an overarching plot connecting all missions, and there also several different outcomes to the story depending on your choices in the game.
