Japanese Maples (Acer Palmatum) is a common species used in bonsai. It is a wide ranging group of trees all related and from Japan. They are very colourful; going from green to red, orange and yellow in Autumn through to brown and than bare in Winter. This species has a good all year display.
The species is broadly beginner friendly if you have some experience with bonsai. Considering this the tree is often found in nurseries. Both specialty bonsai nurseries and more generic nurseries. It can be bought for a reasonable price.
These trees will survive in most soil mixes, weather conditions, locations and with limited care. The use of specific soil mixes, keeping it protected and with specific care will ensure the tree looks the best and responds to training.
The tree is a good option for this reason. It is found easily and does not cost an excessive amount. The other advantages are that it is beginner friendly, heals quickly and has satisfying aesthetics.
The downside to this species is that it is slow to gain width in the trunk. The branches can grow quickly which leads to wire cutting into the bark. The branch growth can be effected by use of fertilizer and a deft touch is needed.
