Hermann Kelly: These are the very people who imposed a €64 billion bank debt on the Irish tax payer

Irish Freedom party leader and IREXIT supporter Hermann Kelly told the Claire Byrne Live show that EU representatives have made it very clear that in the event of the UK leaving the EU with a WTO deal, then the EU are more than happy to impose a hard border on the island of Ireland.

Kelly remarked: "When Barnier and Juncker say they are going to show solidarity with you, these are the very people who imposed a €64 billion bank debt on the Irish tax payer so they are not friends of Ireland."

MEP Mairead McGuinness told Hermann Kelly that she wished to correct him and said there was no-one saying they were happy to have a hard border in Ireland.

However, In January, Gunther Krichbaum, a CDU politician and the Chair of the Committee on European Union Affairs of the German Bundestag told BBC Radio Foyle that border checks on the island of Ireland cannot be avoided if the UK leaves the EU with no deal.

Hermann Kelly said the only sure-fire way to make sure there is no border was for Ireland to leave the EU and be free to make a trade deal with the UK.
