On Mount Sinai Moses receives the Ten Commandments. But the Lord Himself advises that he return to the camp without delay, as his people have "corrupted themselves”. Joshua and the others, who have been waiting at the foot of the mountain, meet Moses. He goes with them to the camp with the tablets of the Ten Commandments. But "as soon as he ame near the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, Moses' anger burned hot." He throws the tablets away and they break at the foot of the mountain. Then, he enters the amp, scatters the dancers, breaks the golden calf and asks Aaron for an explanation. He reproves the sons of Levi and all those who have kept the faith: "every man go to and fro from gate to gate and slay his brother, his companion and his neighbor if he has betrayed the Lord.” After his people pay a price in blood for the offense they have wreaked upon the Lord, Moses climbs the mountain again to ask the Lord's forgiveness and to renew the Covenant. Once again, the Lord gives Moses the Ten Commandments carved in stone and establishes the new code of the Covenant with the people of Israel in detail. Moses remains with the Lord for forty days and forty nights, eating only bread. When he descends the mountain carrying the tablets of the testimony his face shines. .
