Baltimore shared the Nobel Prize for his claim that RNA reverts to DNA by means of an enzyme called Reverse Transcriptase. Since it had been believed that the normal process of coding was DNA to RNA, when they found RNA coding to DNA they postulated that they had found an entity responsible for the supposed anomaly, a "reverse" (or retro) virus. Here Baltimore admits that Reverse Transcriptase is prevalent throughout biology and not specific to retroviruses.. You better capture this because all the sites discussing reverse transcriptase claim that RNA converts to DNA in the presence of Reverse Transcriptase due to retroviruses.
There is no need to postulate a retrovirus to explain the process. Like all virology, retroviruses should be relegated to the dustbin of bad science.
