In June, Ireland will be opting into an EU directive which will give asylum seekers work permits allowing them to work in Ireland's labour market. Anthony Jordan, Education and careers correspondent for Farmers' Journal, says he hopes this will enable them to work in the agriculture and horticulture sectors. All the costs of asylum seekers including their housing, healthcare, food and education are paid for by tax payers but they will still be allowed to compete with Irish workers for jobs.
