Ronny Gottschlich, the Managing Director of Lidl for more than a decade in the UK has admitted that access to cheaper labour around Europe has kept a lid on wage growth in the retail sector.

"The grocery retail sector in large parts of Britain is depending on foreign work force and if this work force isn't there any more, you get quite a bit of pressure in the market where it's anyway very difficult to recruit for and this would ultimately lead to higher wages, and higher wages leads to food inflation."
