We Will Not Fear Should the Earth Undergo Change (Psalms 46:1-3)
We Will Not Fear Should the Earth Undergo Change (Psalms 46:1-3)
Paul MacDonald RN MA Dipl
This song – that is to be set to this tune of Alamoth for or by the sons of Korah to be performed by the chief Musician
Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed; or, though the earth change, this is probably to be understood of political changes, and revolutions that will come upon the Earth (compare verse 6).
And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; rather, and though the mountains be hurled into the heart of the seas.
This is a metaphor for still more strange and violent disturbances and commotions. The revolutions and disturbances intended are those that will be caused by the Assyrians future conquest of Israel as described in (Isaiah 10:5-14; Isaiah 13, and Isaiah 37:18-27).
Though the waters roar, foam ,and though the mountains shake with the swelling (compare Psalm 93:3, 4; Jeremiah 46:8, 9; and Jeremiah 47:2), the psalmist envisions here the Earth, mountains, and waters all in an uproar all at the same time. If one was to find oneself in a situation in which all these events were happening at the same time, one would be alarmed and terrified, just like the situation we find ourselves in now today.
And yet, even with this terrible combination of events taking shape around us, we can rely on, and feel the strength and the help of our God who is our refuge, and our rock during these times of distress.
So, when we look at Psalm 46, we have a good deal of evidence that these kinds of things will literally happen, because we were forewarned about them.
And they will happen during the future Great Tribulation. This psalm will be sung by those who enter the Kingdom of God directly after the future days of the Great Tribulation.
During that time they’ll be joyfully praising God, “He is our strong refuge! He has been to us a very present help in the trouble and tribulation we’ve gone through!
We can gain comfort from Psalms 91 whereby those that take refuge in God, that they'll be protected from evil. And even though 1000 die at their right, and 10, 000 to their left, the evil will not befall them, as Angels have been commanded to guard to those belonging to God and to camp near them (Psalms 91:3-9, 11-12, 37:7).
