The original 45rpm single was issued on Smash 2192 - Hey Mister (Rita Welty-Norro Wilson) by Norro Wilson, produced by Jerry Kennedy, recorded August 7, 1968
Not sounding very much like the familiar sad-and-pretty Charlie Rich hit of 1973, Norro Wilson’s original concept heard here was much more intense and differently structured lyrically and melodically. For Charlie the song was partially re-written and simplified by Rory Bourke and Epic Records producer-arranger Billy Sherrill.
