Making TeO2, Telluropentathionic Acid, Sodium Tellurite/Tellurate, and 6 Transition Metal Tellurites
In this video I make tellurium dioxide from tellurium metal. At first I had some difficulty (passivation) when trying to dissolve it in 47% HNO3 so I took the crude TeO2 and reacted that with boiling 88% H2SO4. This allowed easy separation of the remaining Te and the TeO2. Then I reacted a small amount of the TeO2 with sodium thiosulfate and HCl to make telluropentathionic acid. Next I dissolved the TeO2 in aqueous NaOH to make sodium tellurite. A portion of that was oxidized with 3% H2O2 to sodium tellurate (synthesis confirmed using the same tellurate test I did a clip video on previously). Then the remaining tellurite solution was precipitated out using six different transition metal cations: Mn(II), Co(II), Ag(I), Cr(III), Cd(II), and Cu(II).
