Goethe wrote the poem "Geistesgruß" as a precursor of "Der König in Thule", while he was travelling to Lahneck Castle on the river Lahn in July 1774. Under Herder's influence, the setting was changed to the mythical island kingdom Thule, which was thought to be the northernmost place Greek seafarers ventured in antiquity.
Goethe verwendete das Gedicht später in seiner Tragödie Faust (Teil I), in der Szene „Abend" (Zeilen 2759–2782), es wird dort von Gretchen gesungen. It has been set to music by a number of composers, notably Franz Schubert.

Text:
Es war ein König in Thule,
Getreu bis an das Grab,
Dem sterbend seine Buhle
Einen gold'nen Becher gab.
Es ging ihm nichts darüber,
Er leert’ ihn jeden Schmaus;
Die Augen gingen ihm über,
So oft trank er daraus.
Es war ein König in Thule,
Getreu bis an das Grab
Und als er kam zu sterben,
Zählt’ er seine Städte im Reich,
Gönnt’ alles seinen Erben,
Den Becher nicht zugleich.
Er saß bei’m Königsmahle,
Die Ritter um ihn her,
Auf hohem Vätersaale,
Dort auf dem Schloß am Meer.
Er war ein König in Thule,
Getreu bis an das Grab
Dort stand der alte Zecher,
Trank letzte Lebensgluth,
Und warf den heiligen Becher
Hinunter in die Fluth.
Er sah ihn stürzen, trinken
Und sinken tief ins Meer,
Die Augen thäten ihm sinken,
Trank nie einen Tropfen mehr.
Er war der König von Thule,
Getreu bis an das Grab!

English Translation:
There was a king in Thule
Loyal to the grave.
His paramour, while she was dying,
gave him a golden goblet.
Nothing was more precious to him
He emptied it at every feast;
his eyes filled with tears
Whenever he drank from it.
There was a king in Thule
Loyal to the grave!
And when his time to die came
He counted his cities in the realm,
Granted everything to his heirs
Exept of the goblet.
He sat at the royal banquet
The knights around him,
In the lofty hall of the forefathers',
There at the castle by the sea.
He was a king in Thule,
Loyal to the grave!
There stood the old carouser
Drank life's final glow,
And threw the holy goblet
Deep down into the tide.
He saw it falling, drinking
And sinking deeply into the sea
His eyes were closing,
He never drank another drop.
