A strong earthquake struck off the coast of California yesterday.
A 6.4 magnitude earthquake rocked parts of northern California in the early hours of the morning, cutting off power to thousands of people.
The quake's epicenter was 10 km deep in Humboldt County, about four hours north of San Francisco.
This was followed by over a dozen more aftershocks up to magnitude 4.6.
In Ferndale and surrounding Humboldt County, more than 55,000 homes and businesses were left without power.
The California Highway Patrol reportedly responded to reports of cracks in the Ferndale Bridge over the Eel River.
There was no information about the victims.
According to the US Tsunami Warning System, there was no risk of a tsunami after the earthquake.
Severe weather hit Japan earlier this week.
A record amount of snow fell in the southern part of the Tohoku region and in Niigata Prefecture on the coast of the Sea of Japan.
On Sunday and Monday, the winter regime of atmospheric pressure and strong currents of cold air led to heavy snowfalls in the regions of Hokuriku and Tohoku, and in Niigata Prefecture.
Forecasters warn that more snow is expected and warn of potential traffic disruptions and the need to exercise caution while clearing snow from rooftops.
