Steely Dan's long-lost song "The Second Arrangement" was recorded in December 1979 while the band was laying down material for their 1980 album Gaucho. The majority of the song was recorded, with only a few simple additions needed to bring it to completion. However, the tapes were accidentally erased, and attempts to rescue the recording were futile. The band's famously perfectionist leaders, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, were never happy with the finished product, so they scrapped it.
