England itself was plagued with internal divisions and rivalries, with the recently restored king Æthelred the Unready quickly returning to his old ways, despite his promise in April 1014 to be a more just ruler.
But Æthelred's time was coming to an end and English resistance was beginning to concentrate around his third son and heir Edmund. For Cnut, the prospect of facing this warrior prince was far less appealing and would prove an iron stumbling block against his design's for Æthelred's throne...
