83-Year-Old Climate Change Protester Enjoys Sandwich Atop Grounded Train

Phil Kingston, an 83-year-old protester with a group called Christian Climate Change, was filmed eating a sandwich on the top of a train at Canary Wharf DLR station in London as part of the ongoing protests by Extinction Rebellion. According to the Bristol Post, Kingston used to be a lecturer at the University of Bristol and is part of a group called Christian Climate Action. The paper reported in 2018 about Kingston’s unsuccessful attempts to get arrested by lying down on a road outside the Houses of Parliament at Westminster. Christian Climate Action quoted him as saying: “I take action for my grandchildren. I love them so much and it breaks my heart the thought of the world we are leaving them.” He has also been linked on Facebook to a group called Grandparents for a Safe Earth, while a 2015 blog post reported on a criminal charge he faced for spraying graffiti on the signage of a government department. He is reported to have changed the sign for the Department of Energy and Climate Change to the “Department for Extreme Climate Change.” That government department was dissolved in 2016 and its responsibilities assumed by the newly formed Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). BEIS was targeted by Extinction Rebellion in November 2018, with protesters blocking its entrance by glueing themselves to security barriers and the glass entrance door.
