"The Fighters for the Freedom of Israel" – LEHI (aka The Stern Gang), was a Jewish paramilitary group in Mandatory Palestine created by Avraham "Yair" Stern in 1940, when it broke away from Jabotinsky's paramilitary "Irgun". Lehi undertook armed operations against both the Arabs and the British throughout British Mandate Palestine. Its aim was to evict the British authorities from Palestine by use of force, allowing unrestricted immigration of Jews and the reinstitution of a Jewish state, which would be a new totalitarian Hebrew republic spanning from the Euphrates to the Nile, built upon quasi-fascist hardline nationalist principles. Stern was assassinated by the British in 1942, after which Yitzhak Shamir, Israel's 7th Prime Minister to-be, took command of the militia.

During the Holocaust, Lehi representatives met with senior Nazi officials in order to work towards an agreement with the Reich to save the majority of European Jewry from annihilation, and get the Nazis' aid in bringing them to Israel - this in return for the Jews serving as combatants for Nazi Germany against the British in Palestine. Despite high level co-operations with senior German officials and a draft agreement, the deal was never closed.
