By 1855, Putnam, Connecticut was pieced together and incorporated from portions of Pomfret, Thompson and Killingly. It was named in honor of Revolutionary War hero, General Israel Putnam. It's growth stemmed from the Quinebaug River, of which grist, saw and several cotton mills operated in the county. Textile mills arrived and became one of the chief manufacturing employers for several years in that corner of the state. Fast forward 100 years from Putnam's inception in 1855, and we arrive at the destructive 1955 flood that lead to Putnam and other small towns having to rebuild.
