The two gave each other nothing for over 3:41 hours. In the end, the US American Kuzuhara prevailed 7:6 (9:7), 6:7 (6:8) and 7:5 - also because he had the greater reserves of strength.

Mensik's reserves had long since been exhausted. The Czech could hardly stand at the end of the third set. The last game was particularly dramatic. After a long rally to 30:30, Mensik went down for the first time, plagued by leg cramps. He managed to get up briefly using his racket as a support, but immediately sank back onto the court. The referee penalized this as a timeout and warned the 16-year-old, which meant the loss of the first serve. With his face visibly contorted in pain, Mensik straightened up again and tried desperately to stretch. That didn't help either: he served a double fault for 30:40.

Before the following match point, Mensik collapsed again. One of his serves would not go over the net. With another double fault he ended the match - and collapsed for good. His opponent inquired about his well-being, but it was not enough for more than a brief handshake. "This is an unfortunate way to win. I wish Jakub a speedy recovery. It was a great fight," Kuzuhara said. At that point, Mensik was no longer on the court. He was treated by paramedics and pushed off the court in a wheelchair. He could not take part in the award ceremony.
