It started off with the Minister of State at the Northern Ireland Office, Shailesh Vara saying that it was with sadness and regret that he was resigning but the deal as put forward “….leaves the UK in a half-way house with no time limit on when we will finally be a sovereign state”.
This was followed by the political commentator Guido Fawkes reporting that he understood that Downing Street’s director of legislative affairs, Nikki Da Costa , has resigned. She would be the one to co-ordinate legislation through parliament. This has not been confirmed, but Guido said: “One can hardly blame Nikki for not wanting to try to navigate this deal through parliament…”
Then came one of the big ones. Dominic Raab, the now former Brexit Secretary, has also resigned citing the withdrawal agreement and two main reasons.
The first being that the regulatory regime proposed for Northern Ireland presents a very real threat to the integrity of the UK and secondly that he could not support an indefinite backstop arrangement.
And according to Tory MP and member of the party’s eurosceptic European Research Group, Anne Marie Morris, the chairman on the 1922 Tory backbench 1922 committee now has thew requisite 48 letters of no confidence in their leader tucked away in his safe.
