Vaughan Williams completed this concerto in 1926, with the premiere performance being given in 1933 in London. The work was moderately successful, however based on advice from fellow composers such as Bela Bartok, Vaughan Williams adapted the work to Concerto for Two pianos to reduce the difficulty for the soloist.

The work is comprised of three movements:
I. Toccata: Allegro moderato – Largamente – Cadenza
II. Romanza: Lento
III. Fuga chromatic con Finale alla Tedesca
