Fauci and “Gain of Function” Research
Congress is concerned that the Covid-19 virus may be the result of “gain of function” research, which makes viruses more virulent to humans. Fauci claims the U.S. never funded such research in China, but it’s clear he’s not opposed.
In 2012, he wrote, “Scientists working in this field might say—as indeed I have said—that the benefits of such experiments and the resulting knowledge outweigh the risks.” He says this research is important to stay ahead of pandemics even though the experiments “might appear to be risky.” Appear to be risky? Lab leaks, death of scientists, and bioterrorism are real dangers. That’s why scientists worldwide in 2012 stopped gain of function research for a year, and why the federal government stopped it for two years in 2014.
