Western civilisation has a keen interest in Ancient Rome. From neoclassical architecture to political projects in Eastern Europe, it is impossible to divorce the West from Ancient Rome. But why the love? Why the focus, the energy, the scholarship, etc? Why did Shakespeare write multiple Roman-centric plays? Why are so many readers bewitched by blockbusters like I, Claudius and The Secret History?
This video attempts to understand the love we have for Ancient Rome. Here, Madeleine takes a non-judgemental stance and explores the Western focus, and interpretation, of Ancient Rome. At the end, she gives (hopefully helpful) tips in taking your study and reading of Ancient Rome to exciting new levels. This video essay is free of name calling and crude judgements towards those who love Ancient Rome. I hope you enjoy it - and feedback is most welcome.
