Trump Attempts to End GOP Losing Streak in New York with Bronx Campaign Event
Former President Donald Trump aims to break the Republican Party’s 40-year losing streak in New York by holding a campaign event in the Bronx, one of the most Democratic-dominated areas in the state. The event, which expects a turnout of several thousand supporters, highlights Trump’s strategy to appeal to Black and Hispanic voters who are discontented with current economic conditions, particularly inflation.
"President Trump is unafraid to bring his message to every borough of New York," said Karoline Leavitt, Trump's campaign national press secretary. Trump’s appearance in the Bronx marks a significant departure from his usual campaign locales, reflecting his belief in the widespread appeal of his message.
Trump's previous attempts to garner support in the Bronx resulted in less than 10% of the vote in 2016 and 16% in 2020. Despite these figures, polls indicate growing support among Black and Hispanic voters, particularly younger males.
Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., a potential running mate for Trump, will accompany him at the event. Donalds, who grew up in New York City, emphasizes the importance of showcasing Trump as a candidate who represents all Americans. The GOP has seen some recent success in the Bronx, winning a city council seat last year for the first time in four decades.
In contrast, local Democrats, alongside the New York Immigration Coalition, plan a counterprotest, citing Trump’s controversial stance on immigration and other issues. The timing of the campaign event coincides with a brief pause in Trump’s ongoing criminal trial, where he faces charges of falsifying business records related to payments made during the 2016 election to silence allegations of an affair with adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
