Between 1887 and 1888, Rachmaninoff completed a collection of three nocturnes for solo piano. It would mark the first serious attempt at writing music for potential publication and performance. Despite the intent behind the compositions, the work would not be published until 1949, six years after the death of Rachmaninoff.

This Nocturne is comprised of three movements:
I. Andante cantabile
II. Allegro
III. Andante cantabile
