The UN wants Ireland to highlight "our role and responsibility in the trans-Atlantic slave trade"

The UN's Bakari Sidiki Diaby asked Minister for Integration David Stanton whether Ireland's role and responsibility in the trans-Atlantic slave trade were highlighted during our annual Africa day celebrations at the 100th Session Committee on Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

As a result of the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland in the 17th century, thousands of Irish people were transported to the Caribbean to work as slaves. Some were bred with Africans to create mulatto sex slaves for the British colonisers who were considered to be more agreeable to their needs. As a result, approximately 25% of the DNA in Jamaica's population today is of Irish origin.
