My Shitty Game Server - Why...
...I bought a shitty game server because I wanted something better than a Pi. Which can barely run any game servers. It's not meant to.
I know this isn't a server, it's an old Dell workstation. For the hardware specs, it was a bargain compared to the Pi. Obviously uses more power and isn't as portable but it's to be used as a server. Don't need portability. i wanted something equal in price to the current gen Pi 4 8GB, which left a little money for upgrades. I also bought a CPU for future upgrades but that would put it far outside the cost of a Pi so it's not in... yet.
There's some assumption here that you know how to do things like install Java. You go to the download page, download it and run the installer. It's even easier than on a Pi.
History:
The Pi sucks. It's OK for a budget machine but I kept seeing people trying to run game servers on it. Why? That's not what it's built for. Buy a (literal) 10 year old ex-workstation on eBay and you can run so many more servers. Who cares if it doesn't fit in your pocket, lift a weight.
It came with Windows 10 on a mechanical hard drive but I'm using Windows 7 on the new SSD. The idea being that these game servers are so old, most will struggle to run on Windows 10. Plus 10 uses way more resources than 7 and this is a server, we want as much power as we can. Maybe. The mechanical hard drive seems to have had a hard life too, it's not as fast as it once was.
The client is running from Windows 10 on my main i7 machine. It's 7 years old but better than what most people are running today. It plays any game in 4k without complaining.
