Teacher's Pet.
Hey kids (of all ages), it's Saturday Morning Cartoon time again!
Despite launching several spin-off/continuation shows (including a super-cheesy variety show!), feature film re-imaginings, and becoming a syndicated staple for decades, the 1969 prime-time sitcom BRADY BUNCH was never really a hit. But it didn't cost too much to produce, and did just well enough to stay on the air for five years.
In the midst of the show's run, Filmation produced this fanciful, animated spin-off featuring the youngsters from the sitcom. The studio kinda' phoned it in, relying heavily on animation loops and cycles originally created for ARCHIE, SABRINA, and even FAT ALBERT. (All of which have been showcased on this channel.) Having the Meddling Kids thing covered by the titular characters, they threw-in some goofy animals for good measure. And lots of voice work from Larry Storch, of F-TROOP fame. Also known to us as "Spencer" from the live-action, Saturday Morning GHOST BUSTERS that would give rise to an animated sequel series in the 1980s to compete with another company's GHOSTBUSTERS cartoon based on the hit movie. (Both cartoons have also been featured on this channel.)
Filmation pretty much got their start making TV cartoons with DC superheroes in the '60s. Hanna-Barbera was making an unusual foray into licensed properties, developing the SUPER FRIENDS by the early 1970s, but Filmation still had some rights to the characters. (As covered in THE NEW ADVENTURES OF BATMAN upload on this channel.) So we get the weirdness of famous superheroes making guest appearances on the show... Including Wonder Woman, in her first ever animated version.
The Brady cartoon actually did pretty well, getting a rare (albeit short) second production season for a total of 22 episodes. The original cast voiced their characters in season one. Half of them were replaced for the second season.
Usually, I showcase the premier episode. But, since this one started as an ABC SATURDAY SUPERSTAR MOVIE and was split into the two leading installments of the regular series, and because I did MISSION: MAGIC! last week, I decided to go with the episode that spun-off the latter series. From September 1973, and the second season of the BRADY KIDS.
