First Issue (Virgin, 1978) represents a clear dividing line within the punk adventure: on this side blind violence, on the other side psychoanalysis of alienation. Different kinds of inspiration participate in the project: the Zappa-esque dance-psychedelic scherzo of Fodderstompf, the self-flagellating ritualism of Theme (the manifesto of the new course: demented screams, mangled guitar, heavy rhythm), and Public Image, the last remnant of anthemic hardcore. With these sinister monologues Lydon touches the bottom of existential depression, wandering aimlessly in a "terminal boredom" over a universe that has been reduced to a dark, deserted tunnel.
