Ellen Coyne the new Head of Politics for Joe.ie says she believes people are thirsty for "journalism" about direct provision being dismantled. Joe.ie is a news website aimed at young men in Ireland and the UK.
Coyne previously worked for the Irish edition of the London Times until its closure this week. Speaking in a video posted to twitter about her new role at the publication, Coyne said:
"I think that people my age are really engaged and are really passionate about changing things like wanting to see direct provision be dismantled within the next few years, wanting a sex education curriculum that actually reflects Irish society, the existence of gay people and having sex before marriage and using contraception and I think that those people are really thirsty for journalism that reflects that, that exposes things that will help to change those things as well.
"I thought that that's always been journalism. Like since the dawn of time, it's always been this idea of like, you know, afflicting the comfortable and comforting the afflicted."
Nick Henderson, Chief Executive Officer, Irish Refugee Council previously told Ivan Yates that the Direct Provision system was not working and a portion of social housing stock should be dedicated to asylum seekers in Ireland.
